A Spitfire overhead
I have just heard a wonderful noise.
Drifting through my open window was the sound of a Merlin.
This engine powered so many British WWII aircraft, The Hurricane, The Lancaster, The Mosquito, and of course the Spitfire.
I shot outside and there she was. Elliptical wings glinting in the evening sun as she powered across the sky. Based, so the story goes, on the wings of the seagull. A beautiful aircraft. A nimble, fast and deadly machine.
I watched her until she was out of sight.
A beautiful sight. The wonderful fighter up there in her element.

That seagull gets everywhere 😉
The way you describe your experience, I can feel the pleasure and excitement you got Way 🙂
Lucky you, Way, I’d love to have seen that. I saw one last summer, flying alongside a Hurricane at a local air show. Amazing 🙂
My ex introduced me to the Spitfire – he thought it was the best plane ever built..So good to see the old girls in the air again…. glad you enjoyed your touch of nostalgia. xx
Good for you! Me? i love Apache helicopters.None here. But they are on Long Island.
There is nothing like the sound of the spitfires and also the Lancaster bomber. I was lucky to see them both over a nearby reservoir last week to mark the 70th Anniversary of the dambusters raids (humming the film theme tune as I type lol).
