Laughter as Medicine
Several years ago I worked in a pain clinic where people would come in for therapy. I had the pleasure to work with a very distraught woman in her 70’s who came for treatment. She was so sad and morose and I asked her a few questions. She began to open up and I kept her talking. After awhile I began to say things off the top of my head that made her laugh. Some of what I said shocked her and the more shocked she was, the more she laughed.
So I kept talking and she kept laughing until she had tears and was rolling around on my treatment table. I didn’t even know what I was saying because I gave myself totally over to spirit and just became the window for spirit to heal through. Sometimes you just have to get out of your own way.
She said how much she had needed to laugh and that she hadn’t felt so good in years and somehow she felt that maybe she wasn’t done yet, that there was hope after all. I referred her to counseling and she said she would even though she would never consider counseling before.
A few weeks later I was talking to the counselor I had referred her to. The counselor said how sad this woman was. I told her how I had her laughing and she was totally shocked. “You got her to laugh!!!??”
I said yeah, but somehow it wasn’t me – that she just responded well to treatment and that what she really needed, she had gotten and that was the gift of laughter.
I’ve noticed that when I’m down, if I just put a smile on my face it picks me up. Laughter heals better than any medicine.
