Heritage
Through both my parents I received the bloodline of the Mongols. I have always been proudest of that. It made me different from most of the kids I grew up with. The closest ties I made were with the Asian children, most of whom were of Chinese descent. And Mongols and Chinese do not normally get along. Something to do with border disputes. But Asian culture has been a love of mine since childhood. Then I moved to Oklahoma in 1985. There I saw, firsthand, the closest cultural similarities with the Mongols. And I was in Heaven.
Speaking anthropologically, Native Americans and the Mongols are of the same stock. As the tribes traveled throughout the Americas they diversified. Some no longer bear strong physical resemblance to the original people who had made the long ago journey across the frozen land bridge between Siberia and North America. But many of the ancient cultures have remained imbedded in the psychologies of these American tribes. Throughout the Great Plains nomadic tribes followed the bison and other game to hunt. They lived off the bounty of the earth, never taking more than they needed. They had no need to call one place home. The entire earth was their’s. And they treated it well. It was to be cherished and respected. For without its bounty life could not continue.
Life has changed in Mongolia as well. Cities have been built, and businesses have flourished. But what many people do not know is that the nomadic lifestyle continues there. Yurts still move across the landscape. The yurt is a permanent tent placed on a platform and moved as needed. Originally pulled be oxen, now often by vehicles, it was home to the family within. Some were quite elaborate. All were functional. Every city in Mongolia has entire communities of yurts…and the families are free to move on if they desire.
The Mongolian people are as diverse as any others. With education many have chosen to become established professionals in a modern world. But many continue on the old paths and follow the ruts of the yurts that traveled the land generations ago. These are my people. And the Native Americans are my people in this world. Here, East and West has met. And I have been fortunate to know it “up close and personal.”
Yes, my friends, I have come home.

Loved your comments on your ancestry.. I also have Mongolian roots, even if they are a long way back. My ancestors migrated into Denmark and settled there, so I hace Viking roots too! My family are lucky, we do have some records from 100AD onwards and I have found it incredibly interesting to follow some of the threads down the centuries. It is funny how we react when we do go to a “homeplace”..it’s like we’ve been there before and truely “belong”..i’ve had that reaction in a number of places that I discovered later had indeed be part of my ancestral heritage..wonderful feeling indeed and I am SO happy for you that you have found your “belonging place”…it touches a part of our spirit that is not easily explained, but belongs deep within our hearts.. . Enjoy… xxx
Thank you, Lina. It is very hard to explain the yearning of the spirit to find its home. I am grateful that you understand. Am also very envious that you have recorded history of you ancestral family. Mine, unfortunately, was either lost or never written to begin with.

I realise how lucky I am to have found out so much of my ancestry, We cannot go back further on the Mongol side as they only had oral history way before 100AD… i have read quite a bit about their history (am NO expert – just interested). As my ancestors happened to come from “nobility”, they had records in family bibles etc..and local churches always kept the “important” entries. I’ve always loved history and it has been fascinating to relise that some of the people I relted to actually ARE related!!! Odd! Spirit links with the land run deep within me, desptie one side of my ancestry coming from the “nobility”… the Celtic side has no problem “reaching out” to the “dreamtime”…. I guess we all have our own dreamtine, and records are only written words, our hearts, minds and spirits know su much more…xxxx
