Politicians vs. Real People

I have posted a cartoon here which says, “What should we do about people who are too lazy to work and rely on government handouts”? The answer.” We should kick them out of Congress”. I am American and our government is called the Congress.

What work do politicians really do? Do they sweat and toil? Do they do back breaking work and can they understand that some people just wear out before they are due a pension? One of our nominated candidates kept talking about “hard work” while he was born with a silver spoon and had a trust fund account all his life.

Can they relate to real people at all? If they could, the world would be a better place.

  1. Rose while I understand your point and agree that not all politicians are what they should be, I don’t think it’s fair to paint them all with the same brush either as there are many hardworking and honest champions of the “little” people as well.

    1. An excellent example is our newly re-elected Governor of Connecticut, Dannel Malloy, who in his first term very ably saw the state through Newtown, Hurricane Sandy and the October Blizzard and strongly supported both raising the minimum wage and instituting mandatory paid sick leave.

  2. Isn’t it the question of what kind of work our politicians are committed to do and the real work they churn out every day Rose??
The USA are no exception in this question at all. Perhaps the world is waiting for a new Gandhi to come but there is no hope for it.

  3. I love all the answers and vonMichael, why can’t we hope for a Gandhi or at least something a lot better than we get. Hope is in short supply and if I took things too seriously, I would lose what little hope I had left.
Laurie, I am glad you have a good governor and we may have a good one also.
Hard work is what I got an education to keep from doing. I worked in a diner one day and quit, and hurt all over. I grew up on a farm and still remember chopping at crab grass in the hot sun. I have been in the city ever since I was of legal age.
Seriously, politicians need to give us hope and to lead us with moral courage to do the right thing. Lately, too many are doing the opposite.

  4. Rose,
There are good politicians and there are those who I call professional politicians, i.e. those who choose politics as a career. They are the ones who have never done a days work in their lives, no waiting on tables, serving drinks in a bar or sweated in a fast food joint. The good ones truly believe that to represent people is a calling and their aim is to make people’s lives better. Such a pity that not all of our politicians are like this. If they were think how better both our countries would be. Pat

    1. Gael, in answer to your question it is because people no longer trust our politicians because they make to many promises so as to get elected which they know they cannot keep. One only has to look at what the liberal democrats promised about tuition fees every LD candidate signed up to a pledge not to raise student fees. When they joined the coalition government their leader reneged on that pledge. Afterwards many LD MPs said they shouldn’t have made such a pledge. Nobody forced them to make that promise so one can only reach a conclusion they did it to carry the student vote. Thus when people refer to politicians in a derogatory manner it is because they have lost the respect of the people. It is unfortunate that those politicians who are true to their word are tarred with the same brush as those who are dishonest. Pat

  5. Hi Rose can you give me an answer to this question please?:

Why on earth do politicians always underline their decisions that their politic will pay out for the future generation in the next 20, 30 years! Do they want to secure themself their decision of today won’t be controlled by the voters cos they will be
dead by that time? Or do they think memory function of the brain will only last for a short time and the voters will forget their promises anyhow??
